How to Give Motivation to Learners

This posting is going to discuss about what motivation is and offer you 10 items how to give motivation to your learners.


What is motivation?

Motivation is the thoughts and feeling people have which make they want to do something, continue to do it and turn the wishes into action, i.e. motivation influences why people decide to do something, how long they want to do, and how hard they prepared to work to achieved it.

Motivation is very important in English language teaching and learning. It can help make learning succesful.

Before we talk about how to motivate learners in language learning, it's better for us to contemplate and ask to ourselves; why were/are we motivated to learn English. Make a list of your motivation. Here are some examples:
a. I was really motivated to learn English because I want to have a better job.
b. I'm motivated to learn English because I want to study abroad.
c. I'm motivated to learn English because my friend can speak English.
d. I'm really motivated to learn English because I want to be a minister of domestic and foreign affair.

After you list your reasons of being motivated to learn English, you'll know how to make your students motivated to learn English. You should consider that every students have different motivation.

The following are some suggestions from experts about how teachers can encourage greater motivation in their learners. 

1.Set a personal example with your own behaviour.
As a teacher, you need to show them how you are really interested in English. Improve your proficiency and don't make them think that you're not good at English. Let them think that you are a good example of someone's who is succeed with English. 

2. Create a relaxed atmosphere in the classroom.
Reduce the learners anxiety. Please be wise and nice to your learners. Make them very comfortable when you teach. Avoid to threaten them. 

3. Present task in an interesting way.
Set every task in interesting way. Don't be tired to explore how to make your students feel happy with your lesson. It doesn't mean you must be funny or like a clown in the classroom. Just set a task that may be achievable to all learners in the classroom. 

4. Good raport.
Develop a good relationship with your learners. Don't make any space between you and your learners. Don't think that you are a teacher that should be respected. Be nice and cool to them. 

5. Increase the learners self confident.
Make your students feel that they have been good in doing task. Avoid to mock or make them embarassing. You can give them positive feedback by saying “good, well done, nice try.” Be honest but don't be tough. 

6. Make the language classes interesting.
Come into the classroom with good preparation. You can use media to make the language classes more interesting. Adapt the language if you feel it's too difficult to your students. 

7. Promote learner autonomy.
Learners are unique. They have different characteristic. You must give them sufficient time to learn freely. Avoid to be sticky in controlling the task. 

8. Personalize the learning process.
Make them feel the learning materials are relevant to their daily lives. Don't be too strict with a book. You can adapt the materials so that they are possible to be used in daily lives. 

9. Increase the learners' awareness of their goals.
In the beginning of the lesson, you have to give them a clear explanation what is the goal of the lesson e.g. you may say “After this lesson you will be able to say greeting in English.” 

10. Familiarize learners with the target language culture.
Introduce students the culture used by the foreigner. Tell them the behavior and how they express something e.g. how to greet someone, how to apologize.
