Playing Tic Tac Toe English Game

Students like to play game when they learn language. The attractive game seems to lose boredom and stress during teaching and learning process.

The following is one of game can be used by the teachers. We call this game as Tic Tac Toe.

Tic Tac Toe Game is taken from traditional game played by children. The game is simple and easy to apply in the classroom.

Tic Tac Toe Game in English Language Teaching can be used as a warming up before the lesson begins. Tic Tac Toe also can be applied to enrich students' vocabulary achievement.

How to apply Tic Tac Toe Game in English Language Teaching?

1. Prepare two grids. See the example below:

Grid 1

1 spoon	2 glass	3 plate
4 fork	5 knife	6 napkin
7 bowl	8 pan	9 stove

Grid 2

1	2	3
4	5	6
7	8	9

2. Keep the grid 1 as the key. Don't show it to the students. Draw the grid 2 on the board.

3. Divide students into two groups.

4. Give symbols to the two groups. Symbol X for Group A, and symbol V for Group B.

5. Tell students the rule. The rule is that they have to guess a word which the teacher describe. If they can answer correctly, they get the number.  A group will be a winner if they win 3 symbols in a straight line.

 Example: Group B wins

6. Tell Group A to call out a number. After that, the teacher describe the word in English or the translation. 

Example: Group A selects number 5. The teacher must describes "something that we use for cutting vegetables in the kitchen." If the group A has a correct answer, give mark "X" if wrong, teacher must give the question to group B. If group B has a correct answer, give mark "V", if wrong give it back to the group A again.

To make it fast and exciting, count 1-5 after giving description or question to a group.
