Using Mingling Activity to Teach English

Mingling Activity is a strategy to teach English. It is one of the way to make students more active in teaching and learning process.

Mingling Activity has several benefits. It makes students practice English a lot. It also reduce learners' stress to learn English. Mingling makes learners not only learning English but also increasing their social life by interacting each other. For the teacher, Mingling Activity gives chance to recognize and analyse learners' problem during the lesson.

To apply Mingling Activity in the classroom is easy. It doesn't require a lot of preparation. Observe the following procedure:

1. Choose a topic to teach e.g. asking and responding to personal identity.

2. Ask students to make an identity card.

3. Ask students to ask 10 different students using the following questions:

• What's your name?
• Where do you live?
• When were you born?
• Where do you go to school?

4. Ask students to fill the report table while asking their friends in the classroom.

5. By the end of the lesson, you may ask 2 or 3 students to read the report.

Teacher role in this activity is to monitor learners. The teacher should walk around the classroom during the activity, listening to errors and mistakes made by students. The teacher just makes a note and tell the errors after students have finished the learning process. 

Remember, do not interrupt while they are talking each other and please do not tell who made the errors. Interrupting and telling one's errors will reduce their interest. Beside that, they will be afraid to speak up freely.
