Cara Mengajar Reading dengan Teknik Jigsaw

Jigsaw adalah sebuah teknik pembelajaran yang pertama kali dikenal tahun 1971. Teknik ini bermanfaat untuk melatih kemampuan mendengar, berbicara, membaca dan menulis. Mengapa demikian? Karena teknik ini berisi kegiatan dimana siswa diminta mendengar dan menulis apa yang teman ucapkan, juga berbicara untuk menyampaikan materi yang telah ia baca.

Langkah mengajar dengan teknik jigsaw secara umum sebagai berikut:

1. Siswa dibagi menjadi beberapa kelompok. Setiap kelompok terdiri dari 4 orang.

2. Berilah kelompok 1 teks bacaan. Minta ketua kelompok membagi tugas: 1 orang membaca 1 paragraf.

3. Berilah waktu 10 menit agar siswa memahami bacaan dalam paragraf yang mereka dapat.

4. Setelah selesai, mintalah siswa menceritakan isi paragraf kepada teman 1 kelompok. Siswa yang lain mendengar dan mencatat apa yang teman mereka sampaikan.

5. Jika waktu menyampaikan dan mencatat sudah selesai, mintalah ketua kelompok membaca hasilnya dan disampaikan kepada seluruh siswa di kelas.

Langkah mengajar di atas cocok jika diberikan kepada pelajar yang sudah dalam level tinggi. Dalam pelajaran bahasa Inggris untuk pemula dan menengah, cara tersebut terlalu sulit.

Untuk mengatasi kesulitan tersebut kita perlu melakukan adaptasi dan modifikasi. Salah satu contoh modifikasi adalah dengan menghilangkan beberapa kata dalam teks bacaan.

Simak langkah-langkah mengajar dengan teknik jigsaw untuk skills reading berikut ini:

1. Persiapkan 4 teks bacaan yang isinya sama, namun berbeda kata yang dihilangkan. Perhatikan contoh:

Teks 1___________________________________________________________
SMP Nusa Indah has a ________ building at the back. It is ______, but it has a lot of books, magazines and __________.

Some of the books are new and some others are old. Most of the books are in Indonesian. Only a few of them are in English and in Javanese. There are two librarians working in the library. They are Mr. Suparno and Mrs. Yani.

Everyday there ara a lot of students coming to the library. They usually go there when they have no classes or during the breaks. many of them read the magazines or the newspaper in the reading room. Some of them borrow books to read at home.
Teks 2___________________________________________________________

SMP Nusa Indah has a library building at the back. It is small, but it has a lot of books, magazines and newspaper.

2. Buatlah siswa berkelompok. Setiap kelompok 4 orang.

3. Berilah siswa dalam satu kelompok satu teks bacaan yang sudah dipersiapkan (lihat no 1).

4. Berilah waktu masing-masing siswa dalam kelompok untuk membaca secara bergantian. Mintalah siswa yang tidak mendapat giliran membaca, untuk menyimak dan menulis kata yang dikosongkan sesuai yang mereka dengar.

5. Setelah anggota kelompok mendapat giliran membaca, tunjuk 1 orang yang percaya diri untuk membacakan hasilnya di depan kelas.
