Suggestions How to Teach English to Young Learners

Children, according to some psychologists, are in the age between 2 - 12 years old. They have different characteristic compared to adult.

Teaching English to young learners is quite different with teaching English to adult. They should be cared and guided to build their proficiency. Here are some suggestions how to teach English to young learners.

1. Improve listening skills.

Children learn language through the sense of hearing. They heard the adult especially their parents talk to them. After several moment they begin to speak up. The way young children learn language for the first time should be adapted by teachers. Give task that make their listening skill will improve.

2. Introduce concrete things.

Children's mind is simple. They can't learn abstract things. Teachers should teach students concrete things. Teach them vocabulary items around them. The task shouldn't complicated to be completed.

3. Teach them daily expression.

Teachers should provide sufficient time to learn daily expression e.g. expression of thanking, apologizing, greeting.

4. Don't be too tough

Teachers should be wise and avoid too often correct mistakes. The correction will make young learners demotivated. It's better to give learners positive feedback e.g. praise after they have completed a task.

Those are my suggestions. Do you have any idea? Share your opinion in the commentary box below.
