Problems Found in English Foreign Language Teaching

Teachers may find difficulties when teaching English as a foreign English, like in Indonesia. This posting is trying to explore what the problems are.

There are some problems in teaching English as a foreign language. Teachers (especially new English teachers) should consider these difficulties so that appropriate method and technique can be used to overcome them. What are they?

1. Learners are easy to forget the language.
Learners are easy to forget the language they have learnt. They only learn English in the classroom. After school period, they don't use it as a mean of communication. The impact, the language is gone. Even some learners don't get the language although they have learnt English for several years.

2. The influence of mother tongue.
Some countries like Indonesia consist of plenty of tribes. Every tribes have their own language. Learners use their own language since they were given birth. The impact is that, their mother tongue is very strong. It influences the way they learn foreign language. Teachers may find difficult when teaching speaking. Some learners are difficult and making errors in pronunciation.

3. Learners tend to translate the language
Learners think that foreign language is the same as their own language. They usually use direct translation to learn foreign language. Teachers may find difficult to teach productive skills i.e. speaking and writing

Those are the problems usually found in teaching English as a foreign language. Many linguists have been tried hard to solve them. But the result hasn't satisfied yet. It's time for us to think harder to find a better solution.
