How To Set Up Lead-in Activity in English Teaching

In the world of teaching and learning, teachers use lead-in activity. This activity is a must during the process of learning in the classroom. We will discuss about lead-in activity and how to do it in the following.

What is lead-in activity?

Lead-in activity is kind of activity that is used to begin the lesson. Teachers use lead-in as opening activity before introducing new language to the students.

The difference between Lead-in and Warmer

Lead-in activity is little bit different with warmer. Lead-in is an activity that is used to introduce topic will be learnt. Warmer is an activity to pay student attention or to warm up their brain before the lesson. In the classroom, a teacher may use both lead-in and warmer. Warmer is the first activity when a teacher come into the classroom. After that he/she begins to give students lead-in activity.

Warmer is used to give spirit and motivation to the students, while lead-in is a staircase to get into the new language will be learnt.

Why should teachers set up lead-in activity?

If we assume English lesson is a house, lead-in activity is the door. If we want to come into the house, we should open the door first. Teachers should open the lesson by giving lead-in activity so that there is a way to get into the main activity easily.

What activities do teachers usually use as lead-in?

There are many activities usually used by teachers as lead-in. Some examples will be given in the following:  

A. Leading questions

Teacher prepares some questions. He asks students to answer. The questions are related to the topic will be learnt. Example, the topic is about electronic appliances. The teacher begins the lesson by asking some questions e.g. Do you know this picture? What is the function? Do you have it? How much is it?

B. Observing pictures

Teacher gives students pictures. He ask students to discuss the topic using picture aids. For example, the topic is about electronic appliances. Teacher divides students into several groups. He gives each group some pictures about electronic appliances. He asks them to discuss the name, price, and the function.

C. Survey

Small survey can be used as lead-in activity. Example, the topic is about about daily activities. Teacher begins the lesson by interview students about their daily activities.

What are the benefits of lead-in activity?

Lead-in activities have some benefits as the following:
1. To give students chance to prepare their mental before main activity.
2. To introduce topic.
3. To build students' knowledge of the fields.
